Bonding & Reactions Review

1/21/2020

Comments

One of my favorite parts about teaching chemistry as part of 9th Grade Physical Science is that all of the topics are all part of a larger story. However, when we are deep into the material for each unit, I expect that many students have a hard time seeing how everything fits into the bigger picture. Because of this, I wanted to help students review for our end of the semester cumulative exam in a way that emphasized the thread connecting the content.

This review is split into 4 parts where each section builds off the answers from the previous one. Since it is important that they are using the right values, I have students complete one page at a time and check their answers with a KEY that I have posted somewhere in the room before advancing to the next part.

Part 1 - Elements, Atoms, and the Periodic Table

For the first six boxes, students must identify the element or polyatomic ion that satisfies the clue presented. Each clue leads students through a review of several concepts about atoms, ions, and elements.
Content Covered
  • Element Families
  • Ions / Polyatomic Ions
  • Energy Levels / Valence Electrons
  • Protons, Neutrons, and Mass #

Part 2 - Ionic Bonding and Naming Compounds

Matching the elements and polyatomic ions from the patterned boxes in part one, students complete the compound formula and name for the combinations presented.
Content Covered
  • Balancing ionic charges
  • Ionic compounds with polyatomic ions
  • Ionic compounds with multivalent metals

Part 3 - Identifying and Predicting Chemical Reactions

Students match patterned boxes with elements and compounds from parts 1 and 2. Given these reactants, students identify the reaction type, predict the products, and balance the equation
Content Covered
  • Balancing Equations
  • Predicting Products
    • Double Replacement
    • Single Replacement
    • Decomposition
  • Single Replacement Activity Series
  • Diatomic Elements

Part 4 - Stoichiometry

Using the balanced reactions from part 3, students are asked to complete some stoichiometry conversions. They will need access to a periodic table with molar masses to complete some of the problems.
Content Covered
  • Stoichiometry
  • Mole ratios
  • Volume of a mole of gas at STP
  • Definition of a mole
  • Molar Mass

Below are the downloadable files for the Bonding & Reactions Review and solutions. Please use and share freely for non-commercial purposes. The editable files are also included. This activity would be really easy to modify by removing a part or two as appropriate for the class.
